Compassion

I learned some lessons today in compassion. I met with a brand new client (an elderly woman) this morning and felt compelled to ask if I could pray with her. It was kind of funny. I asked, "Are you a praying woman?" And she said, "Yes, I am." I said, "Me too... Well, I'm not a praying woman but I do believe in the power of prayer!" We laughed and after she gave me permission to pray with her, we prayed. As we stood in the vacant house, calling on God, I really felt the power of the Holy Spirit. When I opened my eyes I saw that she was weeping. Apologizing, she said that her husband had died just two months ago. I really wanted to hug her, but when I asked her permission she declined and attempted to regain her composure quickly. A song that we used to sing at the Naz that Ben Simcox wrote came into my mind. It's from a Psalm and tells of God being a Father to the fatherless and a defender of widows. I felt a great desire to somehow protect and care for her and to fervently ask God to overwhelm her with His comfort. By the grace of God, I believe I felt a touch of His heart for her.

Later in the day, a dear friend, neighbor and member of the simple church that meets at our house stopped by. She was heartbroken over the pain her daughter is experiencing after a recent surgery. Kim and I were privileged to pray with her, to anoint her with oil, and to speak words of hope and faith - and to simply be present. I am so thankful that she stopped and gave us the privilege of sharing this journey with her. It was powerful to see the depth of her love and compassion for her daughter and to realize how infinite God's love is for His children.

Tom, Bill & I are reading The Gospel of Mark this week. Like the other gospels, Mark highlights the healing ministry of Jesus and speaks often of His compassion. I am grateful to both receive and give the compassion of Jesus.

Time flies when you're having fun!

The days are passing quickly, so here are some rambling thoughts...
We had a great Superbowl party with a few neighbors here in the Woods. It was an excellent time to grow friendships. And I loved hearing Tony Dungy proclaim that it is possible to win when you do things the Lord's way. Way to go Colts!
Business has picked up considerably and is a lot of fun. Clients are being well served and that feels really good.
I had a great time preaching Sunday. Temperatures are cold but the Spirit is hot!
I was fortunate to have lunch with a great servant of God on Monday. I was inspired, challenged, and encouraged by what God continues to do through my friend Michael.
I am reading Matthew this week and thoroughly enjoying it. People ask a lot of questions in this book, and I really like that. The questions we ask reveal a lot about the condition of our hearts.
I spoke for a few minutes today at my business network group. Afterwards, a fellow member asked several spiritual questions. There are a lot of people out there who are seeking and I am very thankful that God opened a door today. God gave a word to Kim last week from Revelation 3 about God opening doors that no man can shut. 2007 is going to be a year of many open doors!
I have a growing sense of expectancy. Hope is alive. God is good. We are blessed.
